Black Girls Meetup: Njideka Akunliyi Crosby

Almost a week ago, I planned a MeetUp (via the app and various other social media outlets) for Black women who wanted to check out a free exhibition. We met to view Njideka Akunliyi Crosby’s The Beautyful Ones work that was – and still is till the 3rd of February – on display at the National Portrait Gallery; It was a joy to be around a group of amazing women appreciating the art of a fellow black woman. Many of us were strangers to one another and that made the MeetUp all the more fun and relaxing.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby

Akunyili Crosby is a Nigerian born contemporary artist, based in the States, whose work references the personal and political layers of her life and history. Her works consist of collages that highlight cosmopolitan Nigerian life – from cut outs of Cabin biscuits, to pictures of D’Banj and Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Palm kernels, and Chris Okotie.

Another MeetUp will be happening on the 10th of January to see Phoebe Boswell’s latest body of work at Autograph. This will be for Black women only, so if you’re interested please click here to register.
